Brava: Fishermen call for support measures during periods of rough seas

Cidade de Nova Sintra, January 26, 2026 (Bravanews) - In times of rough seas, when ocean conditions prevent fishermen from going out to sea, they once again face days of great uncertainty and economic hardship. In several fishing communities on the island of Brava, the inability to go to sea means a total lack of income, leaving many families in a situation of social vulnerability.

According to reports from artisanal fishermen, whenever the sea is rough and the maritime authorities advise against sailing, the activity is completely paralyzed. "When the sea closes, everything closes. There's no fishing, there's no selling, there's no money to support the family," says one fisherman, stressing that in many cases fishing is the household's only source of income.

Faced with this recurring scenario, seafaring professionals are calling on the competent authorities to create alternatives that can minimize the economic impact of these periods of forced inactivity. Among the proposals put forward is the implementation of a social support mechanism or a specific type of insurance for fishermen, which guarantees a minimum income whenever sea conditions do not allow them to work.

The fishermen argue that it's not a question of asking for permanent subsidies, but for a protection system that recognizes the unpredictable and risky nature of fishing. "We don't stay ashore of our own free will. It's for safety, so as not to risk human lives," they stress.

In addition to the economic impact, prolonged periods of rough seas also affect the supply of fish to local markets, with repercussions on prices and the food security of the population, especially on the islands most dependent on artisanal fishing.

The fishing communities hope that this appeal will be heard and that public policies will be put in place to enhance the fishing sector, guaranteeing dignity, security and stability for the families who make their living from the sea, even when the sea doesn't allow them to work.
